March Update – Slowly but Surely

Howdy, folks!

Welcome back. For some reason this is my first post of 2021 – I guess I’ve been hibernating since December! I can’t really blame myself, there, after the year we’ve all had.

What am I working on?

The Dawnbreakers’ Saga – Still clunking right along. In the last post I made, I mentioned we’d just started the Civil War arc, and a few days I go I recorded the last episode of that arc. Progress! We’ve got two more major “seasons” left of this thing before I can take a break from Skyrim, and let me tell y’all, after three and a half years of working on the same story, I’m starting to feel the drag. I’m glad I’ve lasted this long though, and I am going to see this through to the end! Will there be more stories with the Dawnbreakers characters after the saga ends? Maybe. But I’m going to have to take a break first so I don’t end up hating myself and everything else.

Urien: The Dragon of NorwoodStill in pre-production, and having seen how strenuous three years of story has been in a medium I’m used to, I’m starting to doubt my abilities again. I shouldn’t, necessarily. I did a test comic (Dawnbreakers-related) over on my Patreon to see how easily and quickly I can do this kind of thing, and I can actually work a lot faster than I expected. The trick now is getting all the assets done and stop worldbuilding for five minutes. I fell into the hole of Worldbuilder’s Disease and stunted my progress on the actual story a bit. Will I need the information later if I do more stuff in that universe? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe I just handwave it. I need to work on assets and get a buffer made before I start publishing this thing, but I’m almost done with the WHOLE script, so that’s fun! It’s doable, even if it might be a slower-moving thing than I expected. (That’s just how I am – slower-moving than anyone expects.)

Salt – The Great Collaboration Novel went off to the editor and came back in the space between posts. The manuscript is back in my dad’s hands and I’m now in charge of finishing the cover. We had planned to get it out sometime in March, and while there’s still time… there probably isn’t enough time to meet that deadline. Soon, though. Soon.

One more big announcement – I now support Pleistocene Park, which is topical considering that both Skyrim and Uthir may contain Mammoths. (I’d have been supporting them before now but I didn’t realize they had a Patreon until recently.) The park is working on reintroducing the Mammoth Steppe ecosystem to a park in Russia to measure its effects on permafrost, ecology, and ultimately climate change. The badge on my blog sidebar leads to their Patreon page, and there’s a URL on it that will lead to the project’s website. I think it’s an awesome idea (obviously) and even if you don’t support them yourself, you can rest assured that in supporting my weirdness, you’re indirectly helping a crazy awesome scientist do crazy awesome science things that might one day help save the world. I hope. πŸ˜€

And now, I return to my cryptid ways. Stay safe, as always, and have a good one!

December Check-In – What a Year

Howdy, folks!

Around the time that I make my peace with being entirely arbitrary with these updates is most likely going to be when I start having an actual schedule, I’m sure. Anyway. It’s been a roll-with-the-punches kind of year and there have been many… many punches. Time for updates!

What am I working on?

The Dawnbreakers’ Saga – Will always be at the top of the list. Still going strong, and we’ve just started the Civil War arc. With any luck it’ll be a good balance of gameplay and scripted videos; while I don’t have a problem with either and quite enjoy writing out scripts, gathering footage for scripted scenes and editing it all together takes a lot of time. It’s good to be back in the “More Gameplay” zone though.

Urien: The Dragon of Norwood – Still in pre-production. I got stuck on the script about a third of the way through (so, chapter 11/29-ish) and have taken time off from writing to A) build out the world a little more (dangerous business, I realize) and B) work on assets like character sheets and landscape noodles. The only unfortunate part of having a new world to play around in is that I want to explore all of it. πŸ˜€ This has been my consistent “Back-Burner Project” so while progress is slow, it’s because I’ve been working on it between other things. I may have an adjacent project in the works something along the lines of another YouTube channel but specifically for worldbuilding.

Salt – The Great Collaboration Novel is back in my dad’s hands, after copious reworking of Sukhetai’s bits. With any luck the first chapter works better and starts his character off on the right foot – or at least a decent foot – so that his weirdness throughout makes a little more sense. We’ll see! Next phase: Dad’s going to send the book to an editor, and I’m going to finish the cover design. Tentative (very tentative) release date may be some time in February.

Other things I’ve been doing between last post and now include getting better at guitar, working on Black Marsh (very slowly), and making music. I can’t actually remember when I added the Music tab to my site but it’s there now!

And with that, I’ll go become a local cryptid once again. Stay safe and have a good one.

September Check-In – I Forgot August!

Howdy, folks!

See, I made the last check-in early so I wouldn’t forget at the end of July, but apparently I forgot about August instead. So I’ll make this one now and possibly switch my updates to the beginning of the month so it’s easier to remember. Squirrel Brain got me good!

What am I working on?

The Dawnbreakers’ Saga – I took a few days to outline the whole rest of this story, and it looks like it’s going to be another year before we see the end of this thing. I am, admittedly, getting a little tired of this story, but I’m determined to finish it. The end of August was the story’s three year anniversary, so I did basically a week full of recaps so that people don’t have to go back through three years’ worth of videos to catch up. Since I took kind of a personal hiatus in July and August, I don’t have nearly as much of a buffer as I should, so finishing card art and building that back up again should be my top priority right now. (Note to self.)

Secret Lizard Things – Also known as Beyond Skyrim: Black Marsh. I’m on the 2D art team for this mod project! I was going to post about this in August when the Dev Diary came out but alas – I am squirrel.

Urien: The Dragon of Norwood – WIP title for the project formerly known as The Dragon King’s Council. I’ve learned a lot about comics, time, and scripting in the last month or so, and decided to get a lot more organized and condensed. I actually plotted the darn thing out so I don’t waste time getting lost in the weeds, took out some unnecessary side roads, and then actually sat down and calculated how much time it’ll take, how many pages it’s likely to be. The answer is roughly 600 pages, which is a lot but not as bad as I was expecting for the amount of subplots. The original was probably going to be closer to 5,000 if I kept noodling the way I was. 600, I can deal with. I’m on my second pass of the script and managed to condense everything down such that we’re actually getting places and I’m not even 200 pages in yet. πŸ˜€ I’m mostly working on this to give my hands a break between art, though I have made a rough design sheet for the main protagonist. (And several Pinterest boards because I am squirrel.) I’ve still got a lot of work to do; I plan to have design sheets for all of the main characters, some of the supporting cast, and a few locations done before I even think about getting into the main phase of production. I would feel more like I’m procrastinating starting the thing except I’m 90% sure I’ll want reference sheets down the line to keep myself sane and the style consistent. This is, I guess… pre-production? What are industry terms? I don’t know – I’m indie.

Salt(?) – The artist formerly known as Hostage has been with beta readers for a little while now and we’ve gotten some feedback. Mostly it’s stuff on my end, which I did expect. Sukhetai was a difficult character for me to write and it took a while for me to figure him out, so the beginning of the story is a little… meh? I’ve got some rewriting to do on that and then I’ve got to finish up the cover, however working on Urien has taught me a lot about story that I didn’t know I didn’t know (which is, appropriately, a theme in this book) so I’m happy to have a chance to apply that here.

That’s all from me this month! I’ll see ya’ll around – with any luck I’ll post another one of these either at the end of September or the beginning of October. Stay safe out there.

July Check-In – Before I Forget

Howdy folks!

Still alive, still kicking. It’s been kind of a rough month as far as having time to do things goes so this check-in is probably going to look similar to last month’s update. I have been doing a bit of writing, but it’s mostly background work and worldbuilding (yes I know – I’m trying to avoid worldbuilder’s disease but there are some things I need to get a handle on sooner rather than later) which I will link to in the appropriate locations.

What Am I Working On?

Hostage – Manuscript is still with the other Lowell and I’ve gotten an okay on the cover, but because of aforementioned roughness I had to take a detour for my own sanity. So! Instead of the cover I’ve been working on a topographic map of Sudenlan, the continent upon which Hostage takes place. (It’s south of Korlay for those familiar with the other Lowell’s Tanyth Fairport trilogy – which, yes, is one of my favorites and the other reason Esper’s last name is Ravenwood – I truly didn’t expect to be sitting at the same table as my own father at writing cons, let alone doing a collaboration!)

Music – I added a new tab to the Table of Contents, which I don’t think I mentioned in my last update, and will be adding to it as I make compilations. I’ve been working on an OST for a campaign run by my friend David, and he’s given me permission to put the suite on YouTube, so that should be up soon!

The Dawnbreakers’ Saga – I’ve been picking away at what needs to happen next since I’m officially in terra nova as far as planning goes. I know the next Big Thing and what that will entail but I’ve got kind of a chill and possibly boring period between then and now and there may be more cinematic episodes in my future. Before I start doing the next phase though, I also have a recap to compile and new card art to finish. There’s a lot of work that needs to get done before the end of August.

The Dragon King’s Council – This is in the worldbuilding and initial noodling phase. It’s got a little over 200 pages of comic/graphic novel script which is really intimidating and I probably shouldn’t have gone whole hog with this thing, but I want to give it a shot anyway. I’ve also been considering ways to change the beginning and write it for novel so that less comic-inclined people can also enjoy the story. This is the story that I’ve been incessantly worldbuilding, and am in the process of compiling a World Anvil codex for it, so if you want to see what kind of weirdness is brewing, go check that out. I’m staying pretty far away from any story-related information, so it’s very spoiler-free thus far. My immediate next step will be working out the differences between cultural groups so that I know what it actually means to say, “Cason MacRaed is a second-generation Iznili immigrant to Wynecrag.” I’m very excited about this project, but at the same time trying not to burn myself out on it. It’s very much being written by the seat of my pants along a meandering trail where I know the major events that need to happen and where it’s going roughly, but the between bits are a mystery until they land on the page.

OtherCharge and anything Five Realms related have officially been shelved, and I’m considering taking the series number off the cover of Oisinson. I do want to look back at Charge and see if there’s anything in it I could use in the next Asgard book, which I think I know a good premise for, but it still needs noodles and the state of the world is not helping me think about writing modern fantasy. Things I do know: there will be more Loki, there might be more Rig, we may actually interact with Thor a bit more, potentially see some interaction with folks from other pantheons entirely, and I’m considering Vanaheim. We’ll see. I definitely want to go to Vanaheim sometime in the future but I don’t know when. The Asgard series has the potential to be nicely episodic, but I’m aware of the risk of going a bit too formulaic with each book, especially since I tend to think in patterns. I may have to re-read All’s Well and see if there are any threads I left hanging in the breeze.

That’s all from me this month. My brain feels like it’s gone through a blender but we’re still trucking along. I think I’m also going to be a little less rigid about when I post updates going forward, as long as I post them once a month. With that said, hopefully I’ll see you next month! Stay safe out there.

June Check-In – The Late Bus!

Howdy folks! Life sandbagged me once again, but that’s alright.

It’s been a bit since last I wrote an update – usually I post these in the middle of the month but it’s currently *checks watch* June 30th, so I’m a little late. The past few months have been kind of a roller coaster, so I don’t have much in the way of writing going on, but I do have plans? I think? Maybe?

What Am I Working On?

Hostage – The manuscript is back with the other Lowell and I’m now working on the cover for it. So far it’s still in the thumbnail stage while we figure out what looks good, where titles are going, and what style we could possibly use to continue out the series if we write a sequel.

Music – Somehow I’ve learned the basics of how to play guitar over the course of May and June, and have been working on incorporating it into my music. It has opened up a lot of new composition directions since I now also kind of know how to write for string instruments better than I did. I will always be a Brass person (can’t go wrong with Mordor Horns) but guitar is very relaxing… once you get past the hand-cramp stage.

The Dawnbreakers’ Saga – I’ve recorded and edited everything up until the video that will go up at the end of August, which will mark the official 3rd anniversary of the series! Everything after that point is currently in the planning phase, since I also caught up to all the stuff I had planned from the beginning three years ago. Thankfully I’ve got plenty of time between now and then to figure it out, and I can also take a month or so off if I need. Give people a chance to catch up, maybe make some silly videos like a Zaytest “okee” counter. πŸ˜€

The Asgard Series – Sequel is still in the noodling phase. The whole state of the world threw a massive wrench at my face in terms of, “Oh hey, I’m writing urban mythological fantasy set in the modern day how do I incorporate THIS mess?” I’m on the fence about whether or not to just ignore it completely and call it an AU where 2020 was a normal year. I’ve been given the advice to pick an arbitrary date five-ish years into the future but… bruh. I don’t even know what things will be like five weeks in the future. So I’m stuck-ish on that one for the moment.

ChargeCharge continues to be cursed. I got a fair ways into the story and realized it was kind of complicated for what I was trying to do with it. Sometimes stories just don’t work and that’s okay. I did learn some stuff and do some worldbuilding that I may be able to use in the Asgard series, when I come back to it, but for the moment, Charge will stay archived. It may come back into the light in novel form later on, but for sure it’s not going to work as a comic.

The Five Realms – I’ll be honest… I’ve learned a lot about myself, storytelling, and the kinds of stories I want to tell over the past year or so, and I think I’ve fallen out of love with this universe a little bit, which is something I never thought I’d ever say. Esper will always have a special place in my heart, but now, some roughly seven years after I sat down to write Revenant, I feel like I can do better. Which leads me to…

The Dragon King’s Council – I haven’t wanted to say much about this one because I kept working on it a little bit, then backing off again, then working on it, then backing off again, but I think this is actually going to happen. I know enough about the world, the magic system, and most of the characters that I can kind of wing it (heh – dragon puns) until I figure out what’s going on and where the end of this thing is going to be. Right at the moment it exists as a “noodle bin” where I keep all of my ideas for it, and as 220 pages of comic scripts. I’m considering trying to transfer that over into novel form (because it’s a Good Dang Story so far – lots of fun but with a serious side, it kind of hearkens back to the “bunch of D&D adventures” feeling that Revenant had) but I keep running into an issue with the first chapter – that is, since I wrote it for a comic originally, the beginning makes sense for a comic or graphic novel, but not necessarily a novel novel. Whatever I do with it, this one is going to be kind of on the back burner, simmering away, getting stirred every once in a while.

That’s all for this month! With any luck it won’t take me half a year to respond again. πŸ˜€ See you next time!

March Check-In – The Ides of March

Howdy folks! The spring equinox is almost upon us and I am bracing for impact.

Because it’s allergy season. [dramatic music]

Actually, I’m bracing for impact for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which being that I work in retail as a day job. With everything going on right now in the world I’ve just kinda made my peace with the fact that I’ll probably be sick sometime in the next month or so. I’ve been trying to get as much voice-based stuff done as possible so that I don’t fall behind as badly. As such I haven’t done a whole lot of writing in the past month or so, as most of my efforts have been concentrated on The Dawnbreaker’s Saga.

What Am I Working On?

Hostage: I have the whole story! It melded together better than I expected it would, and I’m excited to see where the story takes them if we continue it. (We’re Lowells – we can’t not write trilogies.) I’ve got the full manuscript now and have been slowly plucking away at my own mistakes whilst also trying to find places with extraneous wordage on both ends. It’s a BIG book. With any luck I’ll have that back to the other Lowell by the end of March. (Along with, perhaps, a cover sketch. I have a few ideas.)

Charge: Hit a wall with this one wherein I realized just how much work it was going to be to catch up with my writing in the form of artwork to go along with it. I still think I can do it, but since I’ve got Hostage to work on, it’s on pause. When I hit the last “okay, now what?” section my wordcount for the manuscript was at 29k – and having planned the first chapter out in comic form… it’s going to be a while before I catch up with myself.

Scripting: Most of what I’ve been writing lately have been scripts for the Dawnbreakers’ Saga. The plots are starting to converge in a big way so I’ve had to get my ducks in a row as far as first meetings are concerned. I have a few big production episodes coming up, but I also have some ideas for silly things to do in the meantime if I do fall behind and end up unable to record for some length of time. πŸ˜€

The Asgard Series: I have been told in no uncertain terms that Raylene and Dublin need a sequel. I’ll be honest, I expected this to be a one-off and then I’d go back to the Five Realms, but I’ve honestly had more fun writing Loki alone than most of what I was working on before. So, a sequel is in the veeerry early, babiest planning stages. What I like to call, “percolation time.” Hopefully it doesn’t take me as long to come up with a decent conflict as it did for the first one – seriously, Utgard took me a year and a half. All I know about the next installment is that I want more Loki, more of the kids (obviously), and possibly more Heimdall shenanigans – he did, after all, come up with the, “Let’s dress Thor as Freya to get his hammer back,” idea.

That’s about it for this month! With any luck, April will be a little more peaceful. See you again soon!

DAWNBREAKERS // February 2020 Recap

In case you missed it, here’s a link back to the prior month’s recap, and the story so far!

Here’s what happened this month in the Dawnbreakers’ Saga:

Entry 22 Kinua, Esbern, and Delphine set out from Riverwood into the Karth River Canyon in search of an old Akiviri stronghold, Sky Haven Temple. They find the place guarded by a dragon and a camp full of Forsworn, all of which the team dispatch with haste. Once inside, they make their way through a blood-locked door and come face-to-face with Alduin’s Wall, and the prophecy foretold thereon. After an argument with Delphine, Kinua steps into the stronghold’s gardens, and finds a peace she has only felt before in dreams.

Entry 23 – Meanwhile in Riften, Zaytest and Brynjolf join Karliah in the Hall of the Nightengale, in order to transact an oath with Nocturnal. Despite some initial misgivings about the whole posthumous servitude thing, Zaytest becomes a Nightengale, and heads to Irkngthand to confront Mercer Frey, and exact her own revenge.

Entry 24 – After sorting out a plan of action with Ingrath and Serana, Arden heads back to the College of Winterhold to track down an Elder Scroll. Along the way, he confesses to a bit of pining for his bosmer associate, and manages to take down a werebear. When he arrives and asks Urag for help, he points Arden to the outpost of a madman named Septimus Signus. After a brief stop to have a chat with Ancano’s ashes, Arden learns about an Elder Scroll supposedly hidden in the depths of Blackreach. On his somewhat fatalistic return, he finds a visitor waiting by the bridge with whom he has a chat about Ayleid funeral rites, immortality, and love.

Entry 25Having found and activated the portal in Valerica’s lab, Ingrath and Serana step into the Soul Cairn to track down the woman and her Elder Scroll. Along the way they run into many an unfortunate soul that came afoul of necromancers, as well as a skeletal horse named Arvak. Once they’ve found Valerica, they set out again on a mission to destroy the Keepers, in order to lower the prison’s barriers and free Serana’s mother.

It was a busy, emotional month for the Breakers! Join us in March to watch Jarnvida fight for the soul of Kodlak the Harbinger, Kinua meet the Master of the Graybeards, Zaytest earn Nocturnal’s favor back for the guild, and Ingrath get a new nickname.

Until next time!

February Check-In – Clunking Right Along

Howdy, Folks! And happy Lupercalia to all the werewolves out there. (Whut?)

I’m actually getting into the habit of this monthly post thing – although next time I’ll mark my calendar so I don’t almost forget. Habits are hard to form, but I’ll get there!

Many thanks are in order this month, some to say goodbye, some to say hello. First, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stu King (aka CouchwarriorTV and fearless leader of the Character Crusade) for seven years of amazing storytelling, voice acting, and audio-visual production over on YouTube. He recently announced that he was moving on to other things, but he was the reason I started the Dawnbreakers’ Saga in the first place, which gave me the confidence to do things like speak at panels and keep writing novels. Stu is, if anyone is, my voice acting and character building sensei, and to him I give a hearty thanks, raise a mug (of coffee), and wish the very best on his upcoming adventures! SkΓ₯l!

Second, a big thank you to my dad – Nathan Lowell, the man, the myth, the Captain of the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper – for boosting All’s Well in Asgard. He didn’t have to, but he did. And because he did, I feel like I have even more reason to be present. So, hello! All you Asgard fans who crossed over from the Deep Dark now know why I keep calling Pip “Space Loki.” πŸ˜€

What Am I Doing?

Hostage: The full draft is currently with the other Lowell. He’s working on meshing the two stories together and getting the manuscript formatted so that we can scrape it into shape a bit more. I haven’t seen the other half of the story yet – aside from the very end of it – so I’m quite interested to see what they look like side by side.

Charge: Surprise Project! I intended to pick Gate Strider back up when I was done with Hostage but I had so much fun writing Loki for All’s Well that I had to dip my toe back into Norse Mythology land for a while… and fell all the way in, as one does. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with Charge – it’s a story set mostly in Vanaheim but dips into 9th century Norway for a little while. It’s been coming together in bits and chunks for the last like eight years or so, but may not lend itself well to novelization. It’s a very visual story, and significantly more adult than All’s Well, so I may be producing it as a comic or graphic novel. Which would be a Challenge, since I’ve never been able to keep focused on the same thing long enough to make a go of sequential art. (Though, I do have a couple of unfinished animations under my belt now. Shhh, secrets.) I’m about 13k words into a rough draft if 4theWords is correct, which I will likely be using as a base for comic scripts later on. Character design is underway, and I’m enjoying the process a great deal!

That’s about all for this month! With any luck I’ll be seeing you again soon!

DAWNBREAKERS // The Story So Far

Let’s be real. As of the end of January, 2020, there are 291 videos in the Complete Dawnbreakers’ Saga playlist. Which, honestly, when I started out back in 2017, I didn’t think I’d get this far. The last time I did a recap was back on video 180, which was at the end of the collective “Chapter 03.” It’s been a while.

In that light, I figured I’d start doing monthly recap posts so that you (and I, honestly) can reference where we’ve been. I realized it takes like four weeks to see some characters again and in the between time, it’s pretty easy to lose the plot. SO! Since this is the first post, I’m going to start from the last recap episode and give a brief rundown of notable events, with video links. Skip to the end if you want to see just the January recap!

WARNING! There may be spoilers ahead. (Though I’ll try to keep the specifics as vague as possible.)

CHAPTER 04 (Intonation, Honorless, Vagrant, Unblooded – Entries 12-20 of Executioner)

After retrieving missing tomes from various places around Skyrim (one of which being a giant’s camp) Arden confronts Ancano about their shared past, tracks down the Augur of Dunlain, and fights his way through the ruins of Mzulft. When he emerges and returns to Winterhold, he finds Ancano trying to unlock the power of the Eye of Magnus. After dealing with the anomalies let loose by Ancano’s tampering, he leaves for Labyrinthian to track down the Staff of Magnus, held by the Dragon Priest Morokei, only to be intercepted by a Thalmor Agent, sent by Ancano to kill him. That agent was carrying a copy of Arden’s Thalmor Dossier, which brought to light things which Arden wasn’t prepared to know. When he finally returns with the Staff of Magnus, he finds the College being held captive, and has to kill the man he used to love.

Zaytest finds one of Ingrath’s old friends waiting for her at the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, and subsequently has a chat with him about it. Afterward, she and Inigo take out the bandits at Raldbthar and on the way back to Riften, Inigo starts to have headaches and mysterious visions. After checking back in with the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood, the khajiits get waylaid by a pack of werewolves. Thankfully, the Dragonborn was coming south (and getting lost) along the same road, and managed to get to them before Zaytest bled out. Once healed up, the team continued to Solitude, where Zaytest found Brynjolf’s contact Gulum-ei and proceeded to track him down and corner him. After pulling off a very lucky assassination, she and Inigo track down the source of his headaches, get sent on a wild egg hunt, and learn about the Doom Strider. After learning more about his weirdness, she and Inigo talk about their shared past, and she formally forgives him for shooting her. They encounter all kinds of friction on the rocky road to Riften, and even more when they arrive. Zaytest leaves Inigo behind, and follows Mercer Frey into a trap… for her.

Kinua continues to have visions, one of which sends her on a pilgrimage to shrines around Skyrim. Once she finds the first, she travels into the Reach in search of the second, begins to hear flashbacks of battles, and meets a ghost that calls her “Hjalti. After returning his sword, she heads back south, and takes out a pack of werewolves on the way. After saving a khajiit’s life, she has another talk with her brother, she continues on her mission, tracking down another shrine at Faldar’s Tooth, only to find an injured vampire as well. She finds the fourth shrine on a sunken ship and nearly freezes to death trying to get to it. In her near-death state she has more visions, ending in her finding the last shrine – the shrine of Pelinal Whitestrake. Whilst trying to figure them out, she finds that the people of Dawnstar are also having strange, dream-related things happen, and decides to help. However, the Torpor of Vaermina ends up having some odd effects on the Dragonborn, showing her not just the past, but the present as well.

Meanwhile in Falskaar, Jarnvida arrives in Amber Creek, not entirely sure what to make of the whole situation. She investigates Bailun Priory and saves some captives at the docks, then heads north to Mammoth Keep after clearing out the Borvald Armory. After reporting her findings, she meets the Brothers Hjorgunnar, as well as the Jarl of Staalgarde. Things do not go as planned when she reports to Borvald to warn Jarl Valfred, and on her way to Kalrun Monastery she has her first unfortunate night with the beast blood. After recovering the key from the monastery, she and the others convene to discuss their next move. Jarnvida fights her way through Vizemundsted, and finally dons Skjor’s old armor when she returns to find a nasty surprise at Amber Creek. She and the others rescue Angar’s wife and children from Fort Urokk, only to be waylaid outside the gates by Yngvarr and his men. Having thoroughly had enough of Yngvarr’s bull, Jarnvida helps clear the path, and the Battle of Staalgarde commences.

Along the way, Ingrath gets sent after a problematic mage and Endarie the mercer. Determined to get to the bottom of Mephala’s taunting, he returns to the old Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Bruma to speak with her. Once confirming that he isn’t insane, Ingrath infiltrates the Falkreath Sanctuary to speak with an old friend, and winds up finding a Dawngard patrol on his way back to Redwater Den. After having his wounds tended by a very nervous Dragonborn, he reports back to Dominique, who gives him a very uncomfortable contract… one that he eventually completes, his way. On the way out of Riften, however, Dominique comes to him with news about Zaytest – and they dash out to save her, together.

DAWNBREAKERS (All stories continue together.)

Entries 1-9 – Following the aftermath of Snow Veil Sanctum, Ingrath recruits Kinua to help heal Zaytest from Karliah’s poison, and the two of them get to know each other better. Once Zaytest wakes up, she and Ingrath catch up, and the two of them talk with the Archmage about Gallus’s old journal. While Zaytest speaks to Karliah and Enthir, Arden and Ingrath have an accidental heart-to-heart, and agree to team up in search of an ancient vampire artifact. Said artifact ends up being woman named Serana, who they escort back to her home. Meanwhile, Jarnvida returns to Skyrim and has another strange night, before taking the fight to the Silver Hand, despite a few horse issues along the way. In Solitude, Kinua reaches the end of her pilgrimage, and begins to question her sanity, while Arden questions his decisions.

Entries 10-17 – Kodlak sends Jarnvida out for Glenmoril Witch heads, Kinua has more visions and does perhaps the worst job of infiltrating the Thalmor Embassy, and Ingrath assassinates Vittoria Vicci and has a bit of a panic attack on his way out. Zaytest has a nightmare about Mercer stabbing her, hears about the assassination, and confronts the Thieves’ Guild. Meanwhile, Arden meets the mysterious Dominique Gold, then heads to Dawnstar, where Ingrath finds the not-quite-abandoned Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary. On his way back east, Ingrath gets wind of a fight between the Silver Hand and the Companions, and joins Jarnvida to help take them out.

JANUARY RECAP

Entry 18 – In Riften, Kinua and Zaytest team up to explore the Ratway Warrens and track down the elusive Esbern. He and Kinua discuss the coming of Alduin, and what it means for her to be Dragonborn. Kinua bids Zaytest farewell, and two sneaky khajiit do their own infiltration, this time of Mercer Frey’s manor.

Entry 19While waiting for Ingrath in Dragon Bridge, Arden receives a letter from Loptir, an old friend of his from the College of Whispers. Ingrath hears a strange voice, and asks Arden about it when he arrives. The two of them and Serana head out to track down a moth priest, and hear the first part of the Tyranny of the Sun prophecy, before realizing they’ll need two more Elder Scrolls for the rest. They agree to split up, and Arden heads for Winterhold.

Entry 20Ingrath and Serana dig through the old, skeleton-infested back entrance to Castle Volkihar in search for Valerica and her Elder Scroll. They end up talking about family, childhoods, and necromancy, and Ingrath remembers a few snippets of conversation with his mother, and his old family in the Brotherhood.

Entry 21 – Jarnvida and Vilkas return for Kodlak’s funeral, and the old Skaal pays her respects to the old man. The Circle convenes to figure out their next move, and Eorland reforges Wuuthrad, in order to unlock Ysgrammor’s tomb. On her way to do just that, Jarnvida considers her legacy, her family, and what it means to her to have – and have a potential cure for – the Beast Blood.

That was a long one! I promise the next one won’t be nearly as bad, since it’ll be just the monthly recap, rather than the whole Story So Far. I will link back to this page in the future as reference, however.

Join us next month to watch Kinua bring the thunder to a Forsworn camp, Zaytest doing sneakier things than usual, Arden having a chat with a madman, and Ingrath trying to navigate the sheer, crushing despair of the Soul Cairn.
